Summalon Alpaca Stud is situated on the picturesque property of Summerhill Farm at Main Ridge on the Mornington Peninsula, south east of Melbourne. The stud was established in 2003 with the purchase of two pregnant hembras with female cria at foot, beginning the journey of breeding fine white huacaya alpaca. A major leap forward was made in 2007 with an introduction to Dr Jim Watts and the SRS system of breed selection. Our focus now is to breed a small number of high quality animals.
Access to quality stud males dramatically improved the following season's cria, demonstrating the effectiveness of following a proven breed system.
The purchase of the four-month-old male Halcyon Storm Seeker (ET) at auction in 2008 from the Halcyon Stud was an exciting moment for Summalon Alpacas. Stormy was subsequently classified by Dr Watts as a 'wool' sire within the SRS system. Stormy and his fleece were successfully shown over a number of years until his sale in 2014. His impact on herd quality was seen in the improved fineness, density and crimp definition of the fleeces. Stormy's progeny also became prize winners. Since then we have used outside SRS sires to bring in specific attributes and proven diversity to the herd.
As a stud on small acreage, we usually have animals for sale - practicalities mean we can't keep them all! So if you are looking for an alpaca as a pet, or a herd or flock guardian, or a wool producer, or quality breeding females - please contact us. We'd love to help.
